Why are women vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases

  • Sexually transmitted disease (STDs) are a very common disease in women nowadays. This affects women of almost all age groups including young women. It's very important to know the reasons for STDs and what steps women can take to prevent themselves. Although men and women are equally affected by STDs, women are biologically more vulnerable towards it. It is very important to detect STDs in women because it is asymptomatic and often may go untreated. Untreated STDs increase the chance of HIV infection.

Description

  • STD Fact Check

According to reports, 6% of the adult Indian population are infected with sexually transmitted disease and reproductive tract infection or urinary tract infections.

    What Is STD

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which is caused primarily by sexual contact between two persons. One who is sexually active is prone to STD or UTI. Bacteria, viruses and parasites causing STDs or STIs pass from one person to another person through blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids like sweat and saliva. Sometimes it is also passed from mothers to their children during pregnancy and childbirth. In most cases the infection is passed from one person to another through blood transfusion, shared needles/syringes, blades during shaving etc.

Why STDs are on a rise in Women

There are many reasons for the increase of STDs like cases of HIV, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, and syphilis in women, especially the younger generation in India and worldwide. Let's discuss the primary reasons one by one:

    Casual and unprotected sex

Mistaken self belief that these diseases are now less threatening

Vagina is more exposed and vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases

Most women do not feel comfortable (or able) to insist on condom use

Birth control methods other than condoms are also adding to the rise of STDs

    Symptoms of STDs in women

While STD is a common problem in women, not all of the women show any exact symptoms and some of the STIs are asymptomatic too. Even if the person develops some symptoms, it can be easily mistaken for some other health related issues like urinary tract infection and yeast infection.

    Burning sensation while urination

Unusual white discharge from vagina with bad odor

    Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Burning or itching sensation in the vagina

    Painful sex

    Bumps on and around vagina

    Pelvic pain

UTI treatment and STD treatment are very important as ignoring the issues can lead to various other conditions and complications. Contact your gynecologists immediately after you experience any of the symptoms discussed above. Timely diagnosis and treatment by expert gynecologists will prevent various other health issues including the condition of infertility.
